Confederate flag at Mississippi Supreme Court hoisted on birthdate of Confederacy

Well, well, well.  A friend of the blog pointed out today that the Confederate Battle Flag was raised at the Mississippi Supreme Court on the exact date the Confederate States of America was formed.  I dug around a bit, and sure enough, the CSA was formed on February 8, 1861 when the Provisional Confederate States Constitution was adopted.

Pure coincidence as the Department of Finance and Administration says? Or someone a little too enamored with our past and a coverup afoot?

Confederate flag removed; Court to release statement

A few minutes ago, I received word that the Confederate flag that had been flying in place of the state flag at the Mississippi Supreme Court has been taken down.  It is my understanding from people at the Court that the Confederate Battle Flag was raised in place of the state flag in error, and that a statement will be released soon.

Not good timing for a mistake like this, coming right on the heels of new nullification bills being filed in the Mississippi Legislature.

I'm not sure I have words for this:

Yes, that is the Confederate Battle Flag flying outside of the Mississippi Supreme Court in the place of the Mississippi State Flag.  The picture above was taken at approximately 3:20 p.m. on February 8, 2013.

Normally, the state flag is flown on that pole.  The state flag has been replaced with the above.

Colbert Report on almost-Speaker Jeff Smith (R - Columbus), sovereignty bill

Colbert Report notices our flirtations with secession, video to follow soon

According to NMC, the Colbert Report took on Rep. Jeff Smith (R - Columbus) and Rep. Gary "We Backwoods" Chism (R - Columbus) last night over their much-maligned love letter to Jefferson Davis.

Apparently Colbert used the phrase "nobody, but nobody, out-stupids Mississippi." I would argue that South Carolina once did, but only by a nose, and that George Wallace put Alabama in the lead for awhile.

Personhood all over again

They just don't stop.  Rep. Tracy Arnold (R - Booneville) has authored the "Protection of the Human Person Act", which is the defeated Personhood Amendment all over again.  Despite having a ridiculous name, the bill is full of statements like this:

That the State of Mississippi acknowledges and respects the supremacy of the United States Constitution but reserves the right to legally challenge unsound interpretations of the United States Constitution which infringe on the human rights and civil liberties of the people of the State of Mississippi and the sovereignty of the State of Mississippi;

(I don't believe the word "sovereignty" has been mentioned this much by Mississippi politicians in 50 years.)
