Shutdown Doesn't Just Hurt Public Sector:

I am hearing from more than one Mississippi employer today that had plans to do some hiring cannot because eVerify is down thanks to the shutdown.

 Meanwhile, Mississippi's Republican representatives must have gotten the news that the polls aren't happy about the lack of government, as they are trying to shuffle the blame chairs on the Titanic:

The senate voted 18 times to go to conference on budget, and the House voted against it. 
 
I encourage Cottonmouth readers to reach out to their representatives and remind them that these practices are bad for business. The livelihoods of Mississippians are at stake.

Well, Rep. Palazzo (R - Miss.) wound up voting for Hurricane Sandy relief after all, but guess who didn't?  Rep. Alan Nunnelee (R - Miss.).

Sure, Rep. Nunnelee doesn't represent the Mississippi Gulf Coast, he represents places in north Mississippi like Tupelo, Corinth, Oxford, and...Smithville.

Brad Morris releases TV ad: "Support"

Brad Morris, former staffer for Rep. Travis Childers (D), is running against Rep. Alan Nunnelee (R) in north Mississippi's First Congressional District, and has released the TV ad below. The ad focuses on the things that Mississippi Democrats have focused on for years, such as hard work and preserving the social safety net for when hard work isn't enough. It's a good ad, and should gain him some traction in a race that is closer than many think.

A small businessman and attorney in Oxford, Morris grew up in rural Itawamba County. He served as Chief of Staff and senior advisor to former Congressman Travis Childers.

Morris offered the following statement upon entering the race:

Democrats get a new challenger for Rep. Alan Nunnelee (R) as Brad Morris enters race

Brad Morris, the former chief of staff for Congressman Travis Childers (D), has filed to run as a Democrat against Rep. Alan Nunnelee (R). Morris is an attorney in Oxford, and should be able to make a strong run against Nunnelee, who is in his first term. Former state Rep. Mark Duvall (D-Mantachie) had entered the race, but has withdrawn in light of Morris entering the fray.

This should be one to watch.
