Gov. Philbo strikes again: Dan Jones out as Ole Miss chancellor

There has been an ongoing power struggle at the Institutions of Higher Learning, with Gov. Phil Bryant and his appointees pushing to politicize the curriculum at our state's colleges and universities by increasing the power wielded by the IHL.

Gov. Bryant has been no fan of University of Mississippi Chancellor Dan Jones, despite the outstanding things Jones has done for the University. (Bryant is in league with supporters of the old Confederate imagery that Jones worked to wipe from the University's image.)

Expect to see someone well-connected to Gov. Bryant be named to replace Jones. And expect that they will be less enthusiastic about getting rid of the Old South trappings long-associated with Ole Miss.

So, what's with the "Philbo" line in the title of this post?  In 1930, Gov. Theodore Bilbo got the predecessor to IHL to fire 3 college presidents and fire 179 professors.

I've said for months that Mullah Bryant was the worst and most vile governor we've had since Bilbo. Glad to see someone agrees with me.

Wow, I didn't know all of that. I am liking Phil Bryant even more now. A little "dixie" ain't gonna hurt nobody and we can only hope 170 + professors would be fired, especially the ones who can't speak English but expect my daughter and son to still pass their class.

Anonymous... a little more "Dixie" is exactly what the University of Mississippi doesn't need. I hope you like crappy academics, crappy athletic teams (good luck recruiting out of state and even in-state for that matter) and the earned reputation (thanks to idiots like you) of a Deep South school administered and populated by a bunch of ignorant, bigoted redneck idiots. Congratulations.

Definitely true. Why, anyone would think that the south was based on slave-holding and that the flag might actually remind people about that. But what do they know; we'll just rewrite us some history, no sweat.

Great spin, Eichelberger, but the facts (again) don't match your rhetoric. Bryant has appointed four of the members of the College Board (of twelve). Don't know how that equates to the 9-2 vote of the board to come to the conclusion that Bryant had Jones fired.

Don't know all 9 individuals that voted not to extend Jones' contract (yes, that's right - he is just like college coaches and has a contract for a term, not for life) but do know some of them. And know that they aren't going to be pushed around by anyone, much less a Governor, to do something that they didn't believe was the right thing to do. Much more here than your trying to make this be a 'racial' issue - or a Bryant issue. Realize that doesn't sell spots on your blog, but darn those pesky facts. All the time getting in the way of a good storyline.

Well, we know why Anonymous doesn't want anyone to know its name.

not anonymous, nor redcreek said...

well said 'redcreek'! don't know which 'anonymous' you are referring to, but we sure don't know his/her name - but I am positive we all know who 'redcreek' is.

Ya sure this didn't have anything to do with Boss Hogg over at the B/S Law Firm? Philbo's daughter works there too right? And, now what other politicians' relatives work there? Hhhmm... And, what law firm has the most business in Mississippi - especially the 1.6 billion dollar agency's legal business? --- You got it!! B/S When are our legislatures going to act upon this, the ethics commission, or the Peer Committee? Hint: B/S is the tallest building in Madison County if you weren't sure where it was...
