"The best thing to come through Mississippi since cornbread." - Rep. Willie Bailey (D - Greenville) Named one of the best state-based political blogs by the Washington Post R.I.P. Craig Noone (1979-2011)
WAPT has posted a slideshow ranking states based on uninsured residents. Mississippi comes in at 44 as nearly 1 in 5 Mississippians do not currently have health insurance.
Thanks for bringing attention to this issue! One thing readers may wish to be careful about: this data was collected through a survey, which means respondents needed to follow directions about what "uninsured" means. While some people may have reported themselves as "insured" because their coverage ended during the same year, it's not clear whether respondents who were enrolled in Medicaid or Medicare understood that those programs qualify as "government coverage." A significant number may have reported themselves as uninsured because they do not purchase an insurance plan for themselves.
Anyone who's interested in reading the study's methodology can do so here: http://www.census.gov/prod/2011pubs/p60-239.pdf
Jake, there's also a gallup poll placing Mississippi second in percentage of uninsured at 24.9 percent. I actually think people on Medicaid and Medicare do know whether they're insured or not.
