Leader Moak to deliver Democratic Response, calls for end to spoils system

Rep. Bobby Moak (D-Bogue Chitto), House Democratic Caucus Leader, will deliver tonight's Democratic Response to the State of the State address.  Moak's response will air immediately following Governor Bryant's State of the State address at 5:30 p.m.  You can follow broadcasts of the speeches at MPB TV, MPB Radio or at mpbonline.org.

Rep. Moak shared the following portion of tonight’s address with Cottonmouth:
"We must also join together to find ways to eliminate the good ole boy system in Mississippi government.  Elections do matter and elected leaders should be given the tools they need to lead, but the hiring of campaign workers to perform governmental functions has become too common in Mississippi.  When campaign staffers infiltrate every corner of the capitol, it creates an environment of perpetual campaigning and institutionalizes gridlock.  Mississippi taxpayers should not be made to subsidize political activity through high salaried, created positions."  
Wonder what he could be talking about?

New definition of irony: When Bobby Moak talks about doing away with the good ole boy system. Compretta drawing $90,000 extra a year when McCoy was perfectly able to perform his duties? If the good ole boy system was ever alive and well, it was when the Democrats were in control. I'm not saying that there hasn't been patronage under Republicans and won't be more, but Bobby Moak acting self righteous about it now that he can't have any is ridiculous. The Speaker Wanna Be needs to find another topic. Bill Billingsley

Several issues here, Bill.

First, what did Bobby Moak have to do with perpetuating any "good ole boy" system?

Second, you're saying that McCoy was "perfectly able to perform his duties" after having a major stroke?!?

Finally, since when is "those guys do it too" a good basis for public policy?

Wow, looks like we almost have ourselves an opposition party here in the Magnolia state! Good for Moak, go out there each and every day and tell the voters of this state what is happening with their hard earned tax dollars. Tell them about what the republican party is promising them to get their votes, then tell them what they are ACTUALLY doing once in office. Tell them how they holler about job creation and being friends of small, in state local business, then go to the Capitol Building in Jackson and make sure that the biggest, richest, out of state, foreign-owned giant corporations don't play on the same level field, don't pay their 5% state income taxes to Mississippi, send their money OUTSIDE of Mississippi. Tell them each and every day, remind them, over and over and over again. They might then hear what you have to say. They might just start to see that what republicans say, what they campaign on, and what they ACTUALLY DO once in power, are mutually exclusive.

Matt, come on. Bobby Moak was in the House leadership for a number of years, and if you're saying that the Democrats in the House leadership never involved themselves in any kind of good ole boy system then we're on completely different planets on this one. Yes, I'm saying that McCoy was perfectly capable of performing his duties after recovering from his stroke. When did Compretta go off the payroll as Deputy Speaker or whatever it was called? On the same day a few weeks ago that he left the House. Read my comment again - I'm not saying it's okay, I'm just saying it takes some chutzpah for a former leader in the House Democratic caucus to accuse the new leadership of political patronage. BB
