The United States Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit issued an opinion yesterday that blocks two portions of Alabama's immigration legislation from going into effect. The two blocked sections prohibit employers from hiring people without citizenship papers and keep municipalities from contracting with people who cannot prove their citizenship. (The latter provision could prevent folks from getting water and electricity.)
Mississippi House Bill 488 contains similar provisions, and appears to be headed to the House floor next week. Will the House pass a bill that is almost certain to be enjoined by the federal courts? We'll see.
