A statement from Rickey Cole, Chairman of the Mississippi Democratic Party:
"In 1996, then-President Bill Clinton signed the Defense of Marriage Act into federal law. Today, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned that law as unconstitutional.
I agree with former President Clinton, who today said 'by overturning the Defense of Marriage Act, the court recognized that discrimination towards any group holds us all back in our efforts to form a more perfect union'.
The Court's decision reminds us that we are all endowed by our Creator with the unalienable rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. This is a major step in the right direction to ensure that we fulfill our Founders' vision. Today, a majority on the U.S. Supreme Court issued an opinion in keeping with the mighty words emblazoned upon their building: 'equal justice under law'.
With this ruling, equality prevails."
