***BREAKING - Philip Gunn looks for Black Caucus support***
Rep. Philip Gunn, the supposed GOP nominee, has approached the Legislative Black Caucus for support in his bid for Speaker.
Why not? A Speaker nominee getting 100 votes on the first ballot would send a very strong message to those who might try and oppose him, and there are plenty of plum committee assignments to go around. Moak, Reynolds, Holland, Brown, Stringer...they never thought they would be on the outside looking in, but it appears that's exactly what's about to happen.
I agree that a Speaker candidate should be looking for support from everyone. It's the TEA Party that seems to think otherwise. I don't see them being very happy if Black Caucus members get key chairmanships and committee assignments.
let the likes of Holland, et al that have held Mississippi down for years sit on the sidelines for awhile. Did McCoy ever appoint any person other than a lackey of his to a chair? Not hardly. However, the dems now want to "reach across the aisle" for unison. Bull malarkey.
David, you're wrong. The first person that comes to mind is ultra-conservative Rep. Mark Formby (R-Picayune) who was appointed as Chairman of Insurance during McCoy's first term. There were others during the first term. They turned on him during Rep. Jeff Smith's run for Speaker, and McCoy punished them for that.
